San Francisco Open Studios 2011

I am so glad I was able to show my work in Fort Mason Center last weekend (October 22 & 23, 2011)! I had a grand time (and sales)!  


I had always wanted to show my work in San Francisco but didn't know how. Also, I was a bit hesitant to approach San Francisco. Each time I went there for whatever the errand I was taking care of, I got lost, and my Google navigation by Verizon often lost signals especially in downtown San Francisco. If I was not lost, I was stuck in a traffic. 


Those one-way roads drive me absolutely frustrated and other drivers (especially cab drivers) would honk at me and yell at me, saying mean things. If traffic system is complicated, parking my commercial van was often impossible. I feel as if I am a wild animal strayed into a big city by mistake each time I was in San Francisco.    


In any event, I think people in San Francisco responded exceptionally well to my dizzy tipsy line paintings. My mini notecards were selling like crazy. 


This was the first time I used my own track lights to lit my painting, and I am very pleased with the result of it. Unfortunately I have only one photo from this show, which is posted above. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed and didn't take time to take photos. 


I am now moving onto the next things that are coming. Sacramento and Seattle! 

Unseen Land

So I call these painting with organic edges between lines and blank space "Unseen Land."

Line colors are actually three colors - teal, copper, and white.

August and September 2011

San Francisco -  August 14, 2011 - this Sunday!  Last month I finally made it to the Stonestown Farmers' Market in San Francisco, where my work was received very well by regulars. I will be there again this Sunday, the 14th. 9am-1pm. It's in front of Macy's. For more info and location  Palo Alto - August 27 Sat & 28 Sun This will make my third participation to Palo Alto Festival of Arts. (photo right is from 2009) A landmark to find my booth (#489) is "Starbucks Coffee." I may not be right in front of it, but my booth should be in the same block. Also, it's across from "Cheesecake Factory."  Kings Mountain - September 3 Sat, 4 Sun, & 5 Mon  During Labor Day weekend, I will be a first timer in Kings Mountain Art Fair.  Please know that free shuttles run about one mile in each direction of the fair, with shuttle stops marked by signs. WOCA's Big Summer Party - Live Painting Gig

It has been a while since last time I painted live. "LIVE LINES" - live painting gig - is back on this Thursday! The party itself takes place at 5-8:30, and I will start painting when I feel like starting. Most likely 7-ish.  The famous 26 feet mural will be on display at this party if you haven't seen it in person! See the video of it.  Event details are below this photo. Epoxy Resin Coating DEMO - Locals Only - Oakland California USA

Epoxy Resin Coating Demo July 19, 2011 2pm-4pm in Oakland, CA

This 2 hours demo session can give you a good idea of what's like to coat your art with epoxy resin. This is for artists who have never used resin but are very interested in start using epoxy resin coating technique.

In the beginning I will briefly explain what resin coating is all about, as well as giving you a handout, then I will perform coating in front of you. By the end of the session you will have a clear idea of what tools and supplies you may have to purchase and what the cost of such investment can be.

You may bring your art work that you are considering coating on, I will give a consultation on your art piece that you bring to this session. I will not give a consultation to an art piece that you didn't bring to my session. If you forget to bring it with you, then you'll have no consultation.

By watching how resin is applied to art right in front of your eyes, you will be able to decide if this is something you want to be doing in your studio or home. Each artist has unique work space situation, and only you can tell if this is going to work in your work space situation.

All questions will be answered within my brain capacity, which may not be much, but I have spent a substantial amount of time and experiments so I know something about epoxy resin. Toxicity of resin will also be talked about.

Epoxy resin causes fumes, and also propane gas is used in the workshop, just so you know. If you are pregnant or might be pregnant, think about it twice.

After taking this demo workshop, if you decided that you will want to learn the actual technique, you may enroll in a private workshop, and the $20 you paid will be taken off from the workshop fee of $200. That makes it $180 instead of $200. In the actual workshop, we schedule the meetings based on your convenience, and the techniques are taught step by step. Materials used during the workshop is included in the fee, but if you are going to be independently using epoxy, you'll need to invest on tools. You'll learn what you need at this demo workshop.

This demo workshop is limited to coating technique only, and only two part epoxy is used. No mold and no 3D techniques are taught.

Please take this 2 hour demo workshop before adding resin coating to your art making. Epoxy resin is not easy to handle, and certainly it is not for everybody. If it was that easy, so many people would have been doing it already.

A Painting that Crossed the Continent

In New York 2011

I don't go to Seattle as often as I wish I could. Once in a while I wonder why I didn't moved to Seattle. But I like the Bay Area as much as Seattle.

In my visit to Seattle last fall, Nathalie Molina bought this large painting at CoCA (Center on Contemporary Art) during an auction so she can have it in her new place in NY. The painting moved from Seattle to New York. I knew that much.  

I didn't know what she did to the painting for a while, but now the photo of the painting is up, and I like the way she did it! - photo above

Painting was made live at "24 hour Art Marathon" event and was put on an auction next day (2010 Fall Seattle, WA)

Art Sales Dead

I wish I could tell you I made a lot of money on the sidewalk show last weekend. Unfortunately my sale on this show was the worst in a recent year. This was my first time showing in this festival even though this annual sidewalk fair has been around for more than three decades.

This fair took place for the exhausting three days, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On Friday street was dead, except for the locals who came to take care of their errands or people who work in the offices and stores. On Saturday, I saw even less people.

Then Sunday came. Coincidentally the weekly Sunday farmers' market took place in front of our sidewalk show just because the farmers' market takes place every Sunday in that spot. That brought more people, and that was the only time I was selling small reproductions. It was farmers' market traffic, not the art show traffic. This festival has been around in the past three decades, and it is known to attract a lot of people, but this year that was not the case.

Economy has gotten this bad. Artists and craft persons can no longer count on sales from art fairs and festivals no matter how skilled we are, no matter how beautiful art is. This is what I call Five-Dollar Economy. Anything above $5 is too expensive. In this Five-Dollar Economy, I was still selling those Mini Notecard with Envelope even on Friday and Saturday even though nearly no one was there. The current price for the notecard is $3.

On a brighter note, people were extremely nice. I made new friends while I was there. And people who hosted and managed the event were nice. Weather was extremely nice. And I set up my booth on a slope for the first time, and it wasn't as difficult as I anticipated. That was all thanks to a friend of mine who fabricated the support bars that get attached the partitions to hold them together. You can see in the photo below where the gray panels are connected together with long bars over the panels. This type of hardware is essential in setting up display on a slope to stabilize the display panels. I could never afford it, but fortunately this friend bartered with an original collage work of mine. Bartering is a way to go in this economy.





My booth looked better than ever. But the beautiful art in a good display means nothing if I spend days on the street and make no sales. I actually do better in farmers' markets. I plan to be at more markets than before. If you are local, check my calendar. Occasionally I cancel the market, so visit my calendar right before visiting the market. If the event is still listed one day before the event, that means I'll be there.

ABOUT THIS ART: This was originally a paper collage on a small solid wood. Most paper used for this art was handmade paper from Japan and other places. The original work was sold long time ago.

This item is an archival print, color corrected and printed by me, artist herself, with Epson printer on Epson paper. The print is mounted on a wood board and laminated by using a service called Lamiframe. This is ready to hang and hangs a little less than 1 inch from the wall. You do not have to find a frame to hang it, and there is no glass!
