ABOUT “Q”
 
Q is a multi-color abstract eye candy. It is a paper collage on a wood box of 9x9x2 and varnished with epoxy resin on front and sides. Q (kyu) means 9 in the Japanese language, and also they look like the character "Q." Q is also a "Q" of question, as one has to question herself/himself what these look like to her/him.  
 
Each piece is one of a kind, different from others. What you think this is what it is. Some see eggs, while others may see beans, rocks, jelly beans, and even potatoes.

The Japanese writing in the middle is a page of Noh script (learn about Noh).

Rheology - Where Science and Art Meet

I guess I am a Rheologist. I just didn't know this fancy terminology to call myself. I've spent quite a bit of time messing with a viscus material which viscosity changes over time. I've watched it slide, flow, drip, and I got good at it. I am a Rheologist.

I am also an artist who makes a maximum use of optical illusion to make a 2-dimensional objects look like 3-D or even make it look like moving. But I didn't realize I was doing just that with my epoxy resin work until a puzzled Rheologist contacted me. 

This image below completely "fooled" polymer scientists who are not actually fool at all (read it here). They found my blog entry and thought there were wrinkles on the drop. 

If you have used epoxy resin, you know this thing is self-leveling even in a very viscous state. Epoxy resin is extremely faithful to the gravitational force and wants to be flat very, very much. What appear to be wrinkles are optical illusions of stripes with different colors. There are NO wrinkles in physical sense. 

Frankly, looking at those images, I myself find it very hard to believe that these are actually flat even though I KNOW they are flat.   

In some disciplines of science and medicine, specialists can understand a lot of things by visual inspections alone. And this is a good example of such a competence in Science. The Rheologists knew the formation of wrinkles was impossible, by only looking at the image on a computer screen, and had to ask me how I performed the impossible.

I do not have much recollection of this piece as it was sold rather quickly. I used a disposable food container as a mold, and put whatever I had in my messy pile. I think it was about 5 inches wide. The whole thing is enclosed in resin.

"Happt Hour" Finally Adopted to a Local

 


It actually took two years to complete this piece. In 2008 I had this thing with only the moon-like thing in the middle with sparkling blue back ground. I kept adding the cloud-like thing but I didn't like the way it looked, so I put it aside. From time to time I tried to finish it but I didn't finish it because I liked the way the moon looked like and didn't want to screw up the piece. 

Then in 2010 I looked at it again and finished the cloud-like thing and put the final epoxy coating on it. Then I came up with the title, "Happy Hour."   


Today it was adopted to a local dude. Happy Ending.
 

Micro Resin

I call this "Micro Resin" because this is a magnified image of a tiny resin drip. I tried to print it but faced some color correction difficulties. Maybe someday when I have a plenty of time I will work on correcting colors on prints. So many ideas, so little time!

Table Top

I always wanted to make a table top with line painting, and this is what happened when I actually did it. I think it is so cool that those items look like they are sitting on waves when the surface is flat.

Tri Color Mini 11x14

    

They may look all the same, but they come in different colors. Dark brown on top, the middle is the obvious red, and the bottom, the black. 

Colors are more obvious before lines are painted. Somehow the presence of lines overwhelms the color itself and become harder to see the color differences.

I can use any color on the background, and this makes some buyers drive crazy, trying to decide which ones they want to get.
